President-elect Donald Trump has announced that his inauguration ceremony, scheduled for January 20, 2025, will be moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to dangerously cold temperatures forecasted in Washington, D.C.

This decision marks the first time since Ronald Reagan's 1985 inauguration that the ceremony has been relocated indoors because of severe weather conditions.

Following the announcement, social media platforms buzzed with reactions, including jabs from political figures. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz shared a photo of himself speaking outdoors in snowy conditions, captioning it, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices," subtly critiquing the decision to move the ceremony indoors.

The indoor venue at the Capitol Rotunda significantly limits attendance compared to the traditional outdoor setting. As a result, many ticketed guests will need to watch the proceedings from alternative locations. To accommodate supporters, Trump announced that Washington's Capital One Arena will host a live viewing of the event, followed by the Presidential Parade. He also plans to join attendees at the arena after the swearing-in ceremony.

This relocation is a rare occurrence, with the last indoor inauguration taking place four decades ago. The decision underscores the importance of attendee safety amid extreme weather conditions. Additionally, heightened security measures are in place due to recent events, including the New Orleans attack on January 1, 2025, which resulted in 15 deaths and 57 injuries.
