US president Donald Trump's second term in the White House got off to a historically low beginning to his administration.

In only 100 days into his presidency, just 39% of Americans approve of how he's performing, the lowest in the early-term rating for any president in 80 years, according to ABC News. While, the previous low in approval for a president at or near 100 days in office, in polls dating to 1945, was Trump's 42% in 2017, reported ABC News.

In a new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos survey, 55% of the respondents disapproved of Trump's performance, down from 45% in February, as per a report.

It's a dramatic reversal for a president who came back into office vowing to repair the economy, make America safe, and "put America first."

Most Americans Foresee a Recession

Trump's economic proposals, which were once a highlight of his appeal to voters, are now a cause for worry among many. Almost three-quarters of Americans, 72%, report that they think his policies will cause a recession in the near term, as per ABC News. Another 73% report that the economy is in bad shape, and over half, 53%, think it's worsened since he became president, according to ABC News.

Even at the individual level, the economic suffering is being felt as 41% of Americans report their own personal finances have worsened under Trump's presidency, as per the report.

Tariffs and Prices Raising Alarm

Trump's tariffs, a central component of his economic policy, aren't convincing the public, either. According to the poll, 62% report prices are increasing, and 71% report that tariffs are contributing to inflation, as per the report. Just 31% of Americans accept Trump's argument that these policies will leave the economy more powerful in the long run, as per ABC News.

Trouble Beyond the Economy

The scepticism extends beyond the economy, 65% of Americans believe the Trump administration is attempting to bypass federal court judgments, and 64% believe Trump is overstepping and expanding the power of a president, as per ABC News. While, 62% say his administration has no respect for the rule of law, according to the report.

Over half of Americans also fear Trump is slashing the government too much, transgressing his powers without justification, and neglecting the rights and liberties of citizens.

Strong Support Fading Away

As per the poll data, only 21% of Americans report that they "strongly approve" of Trump's work in office, his lowest percentage on record, as per ABC News. At the same time, 44% indicate that they "strongly disapprove," according to the ABC News report.
