Does Cutting Aluminum Foil Really Sharpen Scissors?

Scissors lose effectiveness over time due to blade wear at the joint, leading to tearing instead of cutting. While aluminum foil can offer a temporary abrasive fix for minor damage, it's not a true sharpening solution. For long-term effectiveness,...

Does Cutting Aluminum Foil Really Sharpen Scissors?
The effectiveness of scissors decreases gradually over time, without one ever coming to the realization of the change in efficiency. The reason for the reduction in effectiveness is the deterioration of the blade at the joint point, each time the scissors are used. This results in blunting of the blade, leading to tearing of materials when using the scissors instead of cutting them. Studies carried out by scientists have indicated that the effectiveness of blades can be greatly affected, depending on a small flaw in the blade or the tool itself.

What does aluminum foil actually do?

The idea of using foil during the sharpening of scissors has become rather widespread. Yet, there exists confusion regarding the results of foil usage. Indeed, the foil acts abrasively on the blade, which may even eliminate some minor damage and help the scissors cut smoothly. Still, such results can be expected in cases of insignificant damage only because of the softness of the foil, according to ScienceDirect. Hence, it cannot serve as the means of blade sharpening but should be regarded as an abrasive. Indeed, various researchers agree that the foil influences the performance of scissors; still, there is not enough hardness in it for such a purpose.

When can a quick fix be considered “not enough”?

It is necessary to note that, for the most effective long-term use, the appropriate sharpening equipment, such as stones and files, is much more effective. It helps to achieve greater control over the process of grinding the edge, which will make it possible to restore the angle of the knife blade. However, the process of caring for the knife goes beyond sharpening (PubMed Central). Ensuring that the pivot bolt is tightened properly will ensure correct alignment, while the presence of impurities can be removed by cleaning and applying oil. While aluminum foil effectively solves a small issue, it cannot be considered a replacement for caring for the tool.
