Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opens to $88 million domestic box Office despite high expectations

The initial weekend for Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” was less of a blaze and more of a gentle heat. And that’s the anticipation for the complete theatrical run of the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. In its opening three days in theaters, “Fire and Ash” accumulated $88 million, falling well shy of analysts’ expectations, which called for a launch haul between $110 million and $125 million. By comparison, 2022′s “Avatar: The Way of Water” gained $134 million over the same three-day period. Internationally, the movie received $257 million, bringing the worldwide opening to almost $345 million.

Factors Affecting Domestic Performance

“Fire and Ash” encountered some theatrical headwinds, including its over-three-hour runtime and less pent-up demand compared to “The Way of Water,” which was launched over a decade following the first Avatar movie. Some analysts and critics cited that “Fire and Ash” has less technological innovation than its predecessors, which had been a driving element in previous ticket sales.

Almost 5.2 million domestic moviegoers watched “Fire and Ash”, a reduction from the 8.7 million who attended the initial weekend of “The Way of Water” in 2022.

Franchise Box Office Context

The Avatar series has never depended on front-loaded openings. The 2009 original Avatar accumulated $77 million domestically on its first weekend but remained in theaters almost a year, gradually earning $2.7 billion globally. Re-releases have received a total of $2.9 billion. The Way of Water ran 23 weeks and grossed $2.3 billion worldwide.

“With less than two weeks remaining in the box office year, the pressure on ‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’ to deliver big was intense and though the film may have come in a bit below pre-release opening weekend projections, the Avatar films have always been known for their marathon box office trajectories,” stated Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore.

Premium large-format ticket sales also supported the franchise. The Avatar movie performed well in IMAX, Dolby, and 3D, which accounted for 66% of the initial weekend total. While 3D has reduced domestically, it continues to be popular internationally, mainly in China, where the series gets a substantial portion of its income.

Disney’s Strategic Gains

Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS) stated that “Avatar: Fire and Ash” led domestic ticket sales with $88 million in the U.S. and Canada, near the top of Disney's internal anticipations but below the $100–120 million indicated by Boxoffice Pro. International markets added $257 million, positioning the worldwide opening on solid footing despite lagging behind The Way of Water’s $134.1 million U.S. launch in 2022.

The movie marks the third installment in James Cameron’s franchise, with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprising roles such as Jake Sully and Neytiri, concentrated on a fresh threat from the Ash People on Pandora. Disney’s release also expands the value of the Avatar IP received through its $71.3 billion purchase of 20th Century Fox in 2019 and complements existing and planned Avatar-themed attractions in Florida and California.

With Fire and Ash coming with only two weeks left in the quarter, Disney has suggested that the timing may contribute to an almost $400 million shortfall in studio operating income for the time, though extra revenue could change into the following year as the theatrical run continues.
