Walt Disney Co. begins its largest wave of layoffs in a year, cutting hundreds of jobs across TV, film, and corporate finance as part of a major restructuring push toward streaming and cost savings
The Walt Disney Company has initiated a new round of layoffs, impacting several hundred employees across its global operations.

The cuts primarily affect divisions within Disney Entertainment, including film and television marketing, publicity, casting, development, and corporate finance.

Disney’s fourth layoffs

This marks the fourth and largest wave of layoffs in the past ten months, as Disney continues its strategic pivot towards streaming services in response to declining traditional television viewership.

Earlier this year, the company reduced its workforce by nearly 6 percent in the ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks, including Freeform and FX.

Financial performance on point for Disney

Despite these workforce reductions, Disney's financial performance has shown resilience. The company's most recent earnings report in May exceeded Wall Street expectations, with notable contributions from its streaming services and theme parks. Disney+ reported a direct-to-consumer operating profit increase of $289 million to $336 million.

A Disney spokesperson addressed the layoffs, stating, "As our industry transforms at a rapid pace, we continue to evaluate ways to efficiently manage our businesses while fueling the state-of-the-art creativity and innovation that consumers value and expect from Disney."

Situation of the employees

Employees in Los Angeles, where a significant portion of Disney Entertainment Television staff are based, face uncertainty amid the restructuring. While no entire teams are being eliminated, the loss of experienced professionals in marketing, casting, and development raises concerns about the preservation of institutional knowledge and mentorship within the company.

Industry analysts note that Disney's challenges mirror broader trends affecting traditional media companies.

The migration of audiences from cable TV to streaming platforms has compelled legacy studios to reevaluate their business models.

Disney's cost-cutting measures, including the elimination of 7,000 jobs in 2023 aimed at saving $5.5 billion, underscore the company's efforts to adapt to this new landscape.
