Dinosaur Chicken Nuggets Recall: FSIS Issues Public Health Alert

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert Wednesday after state testing revealed the potential contamination, as per a Los Angeles Times report.

Walmart Dinosaur Nuggets Product Details: Great Value Dino Nuggets Parents Should Know

The nuggets, marketed as kid-friendly, fully cooked, and ready-to-eat, were produced on February 10 and come in 29-ounce “Great Value” bags. The best-by date is February 10, 2027, with lot code 0416DPO1215 and establishment number P44164, as per the Los Angeles Times report.

Safety Precautions: What to Do if You Have the Nuggets

Although the product is no longer available for purchase in stores, officials worry that some bags may still be in home freezers.

No illnesses have been reported, but officials strongly advise that any remaining bags should not be eaten. They can either be thrown away or returned to the store.

How Lead Can Enter Food Products

It’s not clear how the nuggets became contaminated. Lead can enter food through environmental exposure during production, and while changes in agriculture or manufacturing may reduce risk, it’s impossible to completely prevent.

Health Risks of Lead Exposure for Children

For children, even small amounts can be harmful. The FDA’s reference level of lead toxicity for children is 2.2 micrograms, but the nuggets tested could contain up to five times that amount, as per the Los Angeles Times report.

Symptoms and Long-Term Effects of Lead Poisoning

Lead exposure can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, infants, and children, potentially causing long-term damage to the nervous system, learning difficulties, and developmental problems. Adults are also at risk, with potential effects on kidney function, blood pressure, and cognitive health.
