Diesel prices jump faster than gas

US diesel prices today: Fuel prices are rising again, but diesel is climbing even faster than gasoline as global tensions disrupt oil markets.

Why Diesel Prices Are Rising Faster Than Gasoline

The national average price for gasoline reached $3.25 per gallon on Thursday, the highest level this year, according to data from the American Automobile Association. That represents an increase of $0.27 compared with a week earlier.

Diesel prices have surged even more sharply. The national average jumped $0.41 over the same period to $4.16 per gallon, marking its highest level since 2023, as per a Yahoo Finance report.

Analysts say diesel prices tend to react more strongly to global shipping risks. The ongoing Middle East conflict has brought traffic close to a standstill in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply flows, as per the Yahoo Finance report.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said that, "With elevated tension in a key global shipping corridor, diesel is reacting more aggressively than gasoline," as quoted in the report.

Why Diesel Is Crucial for the US Economy

Diesel is the main fuel used to move goods across the US economy, particularly in long-haul trucking. About 70% of US freight travels by truck, transporting products ranging from groceries to construction materials.

How Higher Diesel Prices Can Affect Consumer Costs

Because of this, rising diesel prices can eventually influence the cost of everyday items.

De Haan pointed out that, "Higher diesel prices absolutely tend to filter into consumer prices, though usually with a lag," as quoted by Yahoo Finance.

The impact on consumer prices is not usually immediate. Many trucking companies already include fuel surcharges in their contracts, so price increases often appear when those contracts are renewed.

However, rapid increases can still put pressure on transportation costs.

De Haan explained that, "When diesel rises as quickly as it has recently ... it can begin putting noticeable upward pressure on freight costs, shipping rates, and ultimately consumer prices if it persists," as quoted by Yahoo Finance.

Oil markets have also been climbing amid the conflict. Brent crude rose more than 3% to trade near $84, while West Texas Intermediate crude gained over 4% to trade above $77, reaching their highest levels since 2024, as per the Yahoo Finance report.
