Born on September 7, 2003, in Sunnyvale, California, Diego Ángel Luna was raised in a soccer-focused family. His father, Alberto “Beto” Luna, played professional indoor soccer for the San Jose Shocker during the 1980s. His mother, Suzanna Luna, maintains a low public profile, though both parents are of Mexican descent. Family played a central role in Luna’s development, with his sister Kristal also involved in the sport as an assistant coach at Sonoma State University.

Luna began playing for Palo Alto SC before joining the San Jose Earthquakes Academy. Luna represented the United States at the U-20 and U-23 levels before receiving his senior national team call-up in January, 2024.
