Diego Luna’s early life, education, and soccer development

Born on September 7, 2003, in Sunnyvale, California, Diego Ángel Luna was raised in a soccer-focused family. His father, Alberto “Beto” Luna, played professional indoor soccer for the San Jose Shocker during the 1980s. His mother, Suzanna Luna, maintains a low public profile, though both parents are of Mexican descent. Family played a central role in Luna’s development, with his sister Kristal also involved in the sport as an assistant coach at Sonoma State University.

Luna began playing for Palo Alto SC before joining the San Jose Earthquakes Academy. At age 15, he enrolled at the Barça Residency Academy in Arizona, a significant decision that required him to move away from home. Luna has openly discussed undergoing therapy to manage loneliness during that time and working a part-time job at a coffee shop to develop his social skills.

In June 2022, Real Salt Lake acquired him in a USL-record deal worth a reported $250,000. By 2025, Luna had posted 8 goals and 8 assists in MLS, earning a spot on the All-Star team and being named MLS Young Player of the Year.

Luna represented the United States at the U-20 and U-23 levels before receiving his senior national team call-up in January, 2024. In a January, 2025 friendly against Costa Rica, Luna remained in the match after suffering a broken nose and provided an assist. Later that year, he scored his first international goal in the 2025 Gold Cup quarterfinal, also against Costa Rica.

US Men’s National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Luna’s resilience, stating, “He’s got big balls. That’s the kind of player I want in my squad.”

Luna is currently in a relationship, although his girlfriend’s name has not been made public. The couple welcomed a son, Manolo, in early 2024. Luna has noted that fatherhood brought him greater clarity and purpose.

Based on figures from Spotrac and career earnings to date, Luna’s estimated net worth is between $1 million and $2 million. With increasing appearances for the USMNT and potential transfer interest from European clubs, his market value is expected to rise ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
