Did you get this email? Education Department sends forgiveness notices — check now
The U.S. Department of Education is sending emails to some student loan borrowers saying their loans may be forgiven. These emails are going to people who studied at colleges accused of misleading students. Misleading means colleges may have given wrong information about graduation rates, jobs after college, or how much the degree would cost. Borrowers can apply for loan cancellation through something called the borrower defense program.

In 2019, a lawsuit was filed saying the Education Department took too long to process these borrower defense applications, as stated by Investopedia. The court later ordered the department to clear all pending applications by January 28, 2026. The ruling said if applications were still pending after that date, borrowers in the case would automatically get loan forgiveness. The department tried several times to push the deadline further but failed.

Emails sent to borrowers

Last week, a court of appeals rejected the department’s request and kept the deadline. The court also ruled that borrowers must be notified about automatic forgiveness by March 30, 2026. Around 164,000 borrowers are expected to receive this email notice. The email will come from noreply@studentaid.gov telling them they qualify. To qualify, borrowers must have taken federal student loans for one of more than 150 colleges linked to possible misconduct.

Who qualifies for forgiveness

They also must have applied for loan discharge through borrower defense. Their application must have been submitted between June 23, 2022, and November 16, 2022. They must not have received a decision by January 28, 2026, as stated by Investopedia. If all these conditions are met, they will get automatic loan forgiveness. The loan forgiveness should happen within one year after receiving the notice. Any payments borrowers made while waiting for a decision will be refunded.

Who will not get it

The case behind this decision is called Sweet v. McMahon. Another group of about 41,000 borrowers will not get automatic forgiveness. These borrowers applied between June 23, 2022, and November 16, 2022, but did not attend the colleges listed for misconduct. Even though they don’t get automatic forgiveness, they must still receive a decision on their application.

Why this matters

The Education Department must give them that decision by April 15. This matters because student debt is heavy, especially for people who went to colleges accused of misleading students. Many of these borrowers struggled to find jobs and repay loans after graduation. The emails now tell qualifying borrowers that relief is finally coming after years of delays.
