UnitedHealthcare CEO's personal life will be crucial to the inquiry. According to a retired NYPD officer, investigators in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson are taking a deep dive into his personal life, including his friends and family, as quoted in a report by Fox News.

Ralph Cilento, a retired lieutenant commander of detectives at the NYPD and adjunct professor of police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explained that he thinks what the cops are really looking at and what the investigators are really looking at is the victim because the overwhelming majority of homicides are committed by someone the victim knows.

It's close to 90%, which is a really high number. Therefore, every homicide, not just this one, involves a thorough examination of the victim besides the crime scene analysis, forensic procedures, recovered shell casings, live rounds, and other things of that nature.

Even if the victim didn't know the suspect, he said, they might have known one another by proxy if someone sent an assailant to kill somebody.

Among other methods, the standard approach to homicide investigation is to begin with the victim and work your way out in concentric circles, usually finding the murderer somewhere.

Cilento added that the shooting took place on the morning of the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Centre. Thompson was killed in front of the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan early on Wednesday morning.

Probe into the murder

The shooting happened before the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, making it a brazen act where details start the night before. The investigators are working tirelessly to gather all the footage, which is an enormous, painstaking, and tedious task.

They are also investigating the victim's emails, communications with his wife, family members, and current and former employees to determine if he was threatened or denied coverage for something.

The suspect's attempts to use a fake ID and pay with cash are seen as a mere speed bump in the investigation.

A dedicated team in Minneapolis is working on recovering video footage, which is a tedious and daunting task. Detectives are scouring NYPD body cameras to see if the suspect was unmasked and walked past a cop whose camera was activated.
