Did NASA's MESSENGER discover a hidden diamond treasure on Mercury?
An unexpected discovery regarding Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system, has been made possible by recent study. Researchers have found that a significant layer of diamonds is located beneath Mercury's surface. The MESSENGER spacecraft of NASA analyzed data to make this discovery, as per the reports of Daily Express.

From 2008 until 2015, the MESSENGER spacecraft orbited Mercury, providing vital information about the composition of the planet. A 10-mile-thick layer beneath Mercury's crust was formerly thought to be made of graphite, according to experts. The black areas on the planet's surface, which were believed to be the remains of a carbon-rich lava ocean that had risen to the surface, provided evidence for this theory.

MESSENGER Mission

As per the reports of the Daily Express, the first mission to orbit Mercury was the MESSENGER mission, which operated from 2004 to 2015. Not only did the spacecraft collect vital information about the planet's magnetic field and geology during its mission, but it also made important discoveries including finding a lot of water ice in the polar shadows of the planet.

Revised understanding of Mercury’s mantle

This prior notion has been called into question by fresh research conducted by Chinese and Belgian scientists. The research team has discovered that diamond, not graphite, is the substance present in the mantle. This finding is the result of a thorough analysis of the geophysical data that MESSENGER collected. The new pressure estimates at the boundary between Mercury's mantle and core, according to KU Leuven associate professor Olivier Namur, show that diamond—rather than graphite—is the major carbon-bearing mineral at that depth.

Although the presence of a diamond layer is exciting, there would be significant difficulties in retrieving these gems. Since the layer is almost 300 miles below Mercury's surface, any attempt to harvest it using existing technology would be quite challenging.

FAQs

How did scientists determine there are diamonds on Mercury?
Data from NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, which orbited Mercury from 2008 to 2015, revealed that the 10-mile-thick layer previously thought to be graphite is actually diamond.

What did the MESSENGER mission reveal about Mercury?
The MESSENGER mission provided crucial data about Mercury’s geology and magnetic field and discovered significant features, including water ice in the planet’s polar shadows.
