Did hackers from Ukraine bring down X erstwhile Twitter? Here's what owner Elon Musk has to say

Elon Musk has now issued a statement regarding a recent cyberattack on his social media platform, while saying that he was uncertain about the intent of this intrusion.

Elon Musk
Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), claimed a large-scale cyberattack originating from the “Ukraine area” caused widespread outages on his social media platform on Monday. The billionaire suggested the incident aimed to disrupt X’s systems but admitted uncertainty about the attackers’ exact motives.

Musk's latest claims recent scrutiny

Reports of outages began around 6 a.m., peaking at over 40,000 user complaints by mid-morning and 25,000 more by afternoon, according to Downdetector. Musk later confirmed the platform was restored by 5 pm ET.

Experts, however, questioned the Ukraine connection. Alex Plitsas of the Atlantic Council noted the timing—a day before U.S.-Ukraine diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia—made Ukrainian involvement unlikely. He argued Russia had greater motive to frame Ukraine, disrupt negotiations, and undermine Western support for Kyiv. While groups like Anonymous (known for anti-Musk campaigns) could theoretically launch such an attack, Plitsas emphasized only Russia would benefit strategically.

The speculation aligns with recent shifts in US cyber strategy. Last week, the U.S. halted offensive cyber operations against Russia, potentially freeing up Russian hackers to target platforms like X.

Musk’s claim drew scrutiny as Ukraine seeks renewed U.S. aid and intelligence sharing. Analysts stressed that sabotaging these efforts would harm Kyiv, not help it. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in attributing cyberattacks and the geopolitical tensions surrounding tech infrastructure amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
