This extraordinary meteorological phenomenon, often attributed to the combination of moisture in the air and the smoke from sporadic marsh fires, created an environment of near-zero visibility. In such conditions, vehicles travelling along the highway were plunged into a world of obscurity, and the consequences were catastrophic.
Some of the vehicles involved in the crashes caught fire, and even a tanker truck carrying "hazardous liquid" became a part of this nightmarish scenario.
