Democrats oppose party’s virtual roll call
After a brief lull in the Capitol Hill, the Democrats are back in action demanding the replacement of Joe Biden on the ballot box. Many of the Democrats are up in arms against what is being perceived as a short cut nomination. This has been reported by Axios.

The party is planning to hold a virtual event ahead of the national convention in August. This virtual event within the next two weeks is expected to announce Joe Biden as the official presidential nominee of the party. This may help the president quell the voices of dissent against him before the national convention.

Letter against the virtual event:

Many members of the party serving in the US Congress have signed a letter calling on the party not to quash a legitimate debate during the national convention by holding a virtual event. The virtual meeting intends to issue an official nomination to Biden to contest the upcoming presidential election as the party’s official candidate.

Why does this virtual event matter?

The virtual event is expected to begin sometime on July 29 and end by August 5. This is two weeks before the party’s national convention which will be held from August 19 to 22 in the city of Chicago. President Biden is seeking an official presidential nomination during this virtual event.

Short cut?

There is growing opposition to Biden’s re-election bid. Many of his party members have questioned his health as well as his falling popularity rating. After the first presidential debate, Trump’s popularity ratings surged as Biden’s fell. Many of the Democrats feel that the party is heading for its worst performance in November. They seek to stop this by asking Biden to step down.

Biden, on the other hand has indicated that he will continue to contest the election. He has dismissed calls for his ouster. The virtual event means that he will have to survive the voices of dissent for just another two weeks before he is issued an official nomination.

Once, the nomination is issued, he need not worry about the opposition to his candidature.

FAQs

Politically, what does the assassination bid on former President Donald Trump indicate?
The Republican candidate emerged stronger after the debate and called for unity. This has led to greater number of donors including Elon Musk supporting him. There may also be a sympathy factor at play which may lead to better performance during the election.

At this stage, is it possible to replace Joe Biden on ballot box?
The party rules are clear. He will receive the official presidential nomination from his party. There is literally no way he can be replaced until and unless, he himself steps down voluntarily.
