What is James Carville predicting for the 2026 midterms?
James Carville, a former Democratic strategist, is forecasting a dramatic outcome in the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking on Fox News with host Kayleigh McEnany, Carville predicted a sweeping Democratic victory, describing the potential result in blunt terms.
“Frankly, it’s going to be a wipeout,” Carville said during the interview.
He went on to tell viewers, “Your viewers need to know that the Democrats are going to pick up at a minimum 25 seats, maybe as high as 45. In all likelihood, the Democrats will carry the Senate.” According to Carville, those gains would be enough for Democrats to reclaim control of the upper chamber.

Why does Carville disagree with other Democratic forecasts?
Carville’s outlook directly clashes with a recent New York Times opinion piece by David Plouffe, a former senior adviser to former President Barack Obama. Plouffe painted a far more pessimistic picture for Democrats, arguing structural challenges could block long-term success, as per a report by the Daily Mail.
“Right now, Democrats have no credible path to sustained control of the Senate and the White House,” Plouffe wrote.

Plouffe also warned that expected changes to the Electoral College map following the next census could make it even harder for Democrats to win future presidential elections. He noted that a Democratic nominee could win all the states carried by Kamala Harris, plus Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and still fall short of the 270 electoral votes needed to win.
“An already unforgiving map becomes more so,” Plouffe added. His advice to Democrats was to pursue a completely “fresh agenda” rather than relying on what he described as “the same recipes, slightly warmed over.”

How did Fox News respond to Carville’s claims?
McEnany pushed back on Carville’s confident prediction, suggesting that an expected economic revival under the Trump administration could strengthen Republicans heading into the midterms. She characterized Carville’s position as bold, given historical trends and economic expectations.
“Well, I guess anything is possible,” Carville responded, offering a measured reply while standing by his forecast.
What role did Trump’s recent comments play in the debate?
During the discussion, Carville also criticized President Trump over remarks made earlier in the week, when Trump suggested there was no need for an election because of the administration’s accomplishments. Trump later expressed concern that a Democratic comeback in the midterms could lead to his impeachment, as per a report by the Daily Mail.
Following those comments, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified the president’s remarks to reporters.
“The president was simply joking. He was saying we’re doing such a great job. We’re doing everything the American people thought, maybe we should just keep rolling, but he was facetiously,” she said.
McEnany echoed that interpretation, telling Carville that the comments were made “in jest.”

Can Republicans really defy midterm history?
In a separate Fox News segment, Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters argued that Republicans could overcome the usual midterm disadvantage faced by the party in power. Historically, the ruling party often loses seats during midterm elections.
“Our secret weapon is President Trump,” Gruters said. “He’s accomplished more in this first 12 months than most presidents accomplished in eight years.”
