Democratic Party National Convention 2024: Biden can be replaced by the delegates; here are the rules

There are growing concerns pertaining to Joe Biden’s continuation in office for a second term. It is abundantly clear that there is growing opposition to his nomination as the presidential nominee of the Democratic party. The Democratic Party National Convention will be held in August and by then the opposition to Biden will only grow further. Biden who has won the overwhelming support of the members of his party will find it to his advantage that it will be tough to replace him as the presidential nominee in August in Chicago. The rules still remain vague. However, there are political costs to replacing him.

Biden’s comment on being replaced:

During an interaction with the press on Thursday, Biden was specifically asked if the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention supported him. In reply to this, he exuded confidence and said that the delegates were free to choose their candidate.

Democratic party primaries:

Earlier of the approximately 4000 votes, Biden had secured 3900 votes in his favor during the primaries. It is this confidence due to which Biden is holding on the race.

Can these delegates vote against Biden?

The delegates who are representing those who had voted for Biden earlier may technically vote for a candidate of their choice. Hence, during what is known as the roll call, these delegates may vote for a candidate of their choice. Further, as per the rules, the candidates are expected to vote according to their ‘good conscience’.

There is no clarity on what exactly constitutes the term ‘good conscience’. Earlier, most of the candidates who have expressed their interest in contesting the election and who had won the primaries went on to secure a nomination during the national convention.

Can Biden lose out in the national convention?

In normal circumstances, had there been a close competition between two candidates, Biden may have lost out in the race. He is seeking a second term in office and hence has no competition. He remains the only candidate among the Democrats.

Is there a way to remove Biden?

The only way any other candidate can replace Biden on the ballot box is only when he himself quits the contest.
