San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has been handed a three-game suspension to start the 2025 NFL season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The suspension stems from a November 2024 DUI incident during his stint with the Los Angeles Rams. Robinson, 30, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge in July 2025 and was sentenced to three years’ probation along with a $390 fine.

Although the league has recommended the standard three-game suspension for a first-time DUI, the ruling is not yet official. According to NFL Network, Robinson and the 49ers are in the process of appealing the decision.

The 49ers begin their 2025 campaign on September 7 with a road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, followed by another away game against the New Orleans Saints on September 14. They return to Levi’s Stadium for their home opener on September 21 against the Arizona Cardinals.

If his suspension is upheld, Robinson would be sidelined for all three contests and become eligible to rejoin the team in Week 4, when San Francisco hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking on a Bay Area radio show Wednesday, acknowledged the likelihood of Robinson’s absence but noted the team is 'hoping for the best' through the appeal process.

If upheld, Robinson’s suspension would further weaken a receiver corps already dealing with injuries. Star wideout Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from a torn ACL, while Jauan Jennings continues to battle a calf issue, leaving San Francisco potentially shorthanded to open the year.

Robinson, entering his ninth NFL season, had a productive 2024 campaign with the Rams, recording 31 catches for 505 yards and seven touchdowns. He previously spent five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs (2017–21) and one with the Baltimore Ravens (2022).

His veteran presence and big-play ability were expected to play a significant role in the 49ers’ offense this season, but his availability now hinges on the outcome of the appeal.
