Delta flight delays and cancellations at Detroit Airport due to network outage
Delta Air Lines had a problem on Friday morning because of a computer outage at Detroit Airport. The McNamara Terminal, which is important for Delta, stopped working. Only Delta flights and its partner airlines were affected. Other airlines were not affected.

Delta has more than half of the flights at Detroit Airport, so many passengers were affected. The problem started around 5:00 am. Delta planes could not take off or land, check-ins stopped, and long lines formed at the airport.

Delta Detroit ground stop

Delta issued a ground stop for Detroit operations; initially planned for a few hours, the FAA said there is a 30-60% chance it could be extended. Detroit Airport said that maintenance work is ongoing, but the exact cause of the IT issue is still unknown, as per the report by Simpleflying.

If the ground stop is extended, it could affect not just Detroit passengers but also Delta guests at other airports over the weekend due to displaced aircraft and crew.

About 15 departing flights and 17 inbound stand cancelled while 40 are delayed from Detroit today, as per Flight Aware. Data also shows that 330 Delta flights scheduled to depart Detroit today—with Atlanta (ATL) being the top destination with 10 flights, followed by Grand Rapids (GRR) and Indianapolis (IND) with 7 each, as per Cirium data.

Other airport IT problems

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland also saw the lags, with IT issues suspending arrivals and departures around 8:30 am, resuming at 10:40 am. The Edinburgh outage caused delays for a third of departures, but cancellations were minimal.

Airports affected by the Edinburgh IT issue included Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), Bristol (BRS), Frankfurt (FRA), and London Gatwick (LGW). The Edinburgh outage affected the air traffic control provider, causing a total halt on flights, unlike Detroit, which only impacted Delta's terminal, as reported by BBC.
