Recalling the incident during an appearance on Good Morning America, Allen explained that he was taken by surprise and didn't see the assailant coming. He described hearing footsteps and then being struck by a sudden blow, causing him to fall to the ground. Despite being a renowned musician who lost an arm in a car accident in 1984, Allen believes his attacker did not recognize him as a threat due to his disability.

During the interview, Allen's wife, Lauren Monroe, joined him and expressed her distress upon learning about the assault. She emphasized the importance of family support during challenging times. Allen, reflecting on the incident, expressed his gratitude for his wife and family, acknowledging their role in his recovery process.


The assault occurred outside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida, where Def Leppard was performing alongside Mötley Crüe. Allen had stepped outside the hotel for a cigarette when the 19-year-old attacker, Max Hartley, ambushed him. Hartley, who pleaded not guilty, allegedly hid behind a pillar before launching himself at full speed and knocking Allen to the ground.

According to the police report, Allen fell backward and hit his head on the ground. An unidentified woman rushed to his aid, but Hartley allegedly pushed her to the ground and grabbed her by the hair when she tried to escape. After fleeing the scene, Hartley was later apprehended in a nearby hotel's parking lot, where he was reportedly damaging vehicles.

Max Hartley is now confronted with charges including two counts of battery, four counts of criminal mischief, and abuse of an elderly or disabled adult.
