Debate over euthanasia rages in Europe as healthy 29-yr-old Dutch woman granted permission for assisted dying

Once Zoraya ter Beek aspired to be a psychiatrist, now she suffers from chronic depression, anxiety, trauma, and borderline personality disorder. Besides, she has been diagnosed with autism.

Zoraya ter Beek's days are numbered. But this 29-year-old Dutch woman doesn't complain. Rather, the healthy, physically fit and normal-looking lady has wanted to die for quite some time and requested the authorities to grant her permission to be euthanized. 'The Guardian' has reported that the concerned authorities have granted her request for assisted dying on the grounds of unbearable mental suffering. Zoraya ter Beek may end her life in the coming weeks.

Controversy across Europe
A furious debate has been stirred in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe after Ter Beek received the final approval last week for assisted dying under a law passed in the country in 2002. The number of such assisted dying has been increasing, but it is still unusual in the country. There were two cases involving psychiatric suffering in 2010; in 2023, there were 138.

Why Zoraya decides to die
According to 'New York Post', after battles with depression and suicidal thoughts caused by difficulties in her early childhood, Ter Beek first applied for assisted suicide in 2020. Once she aspired to be a psychiatrist, but now she suffers from chronic depression, anxiety, trauma, and borderline personality disorder. Besides, she has been diagnosed with autism.

The 29-year-old Dutch woman initially thought that the safe environment her partner offered would help her mentally heal. It didn’t and she reportedly continued to have suicidal thoughts.

When the controversy started over her decision and she was criticized for it, she hit back at critics saying she took the extreme step just because of her mental illnesses. She said she understands the fears that some disabled people have about assisted dying. She also said people think that when someone is mentally ill, one can’t think straight, which is insulting.

Zoraya ter Beek deleted all her social media profiles after an article about her case was published in April. This led to many users telling her not to go through with the procedure, which left her in distress.
