A Coral Expeditions cruise was cancelled after an 80-year-old passenger, Suzanne Rees, died on Lizard Island. She was left behind during a hike. The ship departed without her. Her body was found the next day. The cruise operator expressed regret a...

Rees, a New South Wales resident, had been participating in an organized hiking excursion to Cook’s Lookout, Lizard Island’s highest point, alongside fellow passengers of the Coral Adventurer ship.
During the hike, she became unwell in the intense heat and was instructed to head back to the ship unescorted, separating from the group to rest. Tragically, the ship departed the island that evening without recognizing she was missing and only returned hours later to commence a search.
Tragically, her body was found the next day.

Rees’s daughter, Katherine, condemned the cruise operator for what she described as a "failure of care and common sense," expressing shock that the ship had sailed without conducting a proper passenger count.
The Coral Adventurer had been navigating the remote and pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef, attracting adventure-seeking tourists for multi-day tours combining marine and land exploration. The decision to cancel the remainder of the tour followed a thorough internal review of safety protocols and operational challenges.
Family members and fellow passengers were notified of the cancellation swiftly after the tragic news. Coral Expeditions has pledged full cooperation with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding Rees’s disappearance and death.
Suzanne Rees’s death on Lizard Island has shocked the expedition cruise community and highlighted the risks associated with remote adventure tourism. Coral Expeditions now faces the challenge of restoring traveler confidence while reviewing and reinforcing safety standards.
