President Donald Trump’s visit to South Korea turned unexpectedly regal when he was presented with a golden crown and medal by President Lee Jae Myung. The lavish moment came amid growing rumors that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un might make a surprise appearance during Trump’s Asia tour.

Why did Donald Trump receive a golden crown in South Korea?

During his high-profile visit to Seoul, Donald Trump was awarded South Korea’s highest honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, and a replica of an ancient golden crown by President Lee Jae Myung. The presentation, held as part of a diplomatic ceremony, was described as a tribute to Trump’s past efforts to promote peace on the Korean peninsula, as per a report by The Sun.

The gifts, according to Lee’s office, were “in anticipation of the peace and prosperity that you will bring to the Korean peninsula.” Beaming with appreciation, Trump admired the neck piece and said, “I’d like to wear it right now. I will cherish it.” Though he refrained from putting on the crown, he called it “very special.”

What was the significance behind the lavish ceremony?

Trump became the first-ever American to receive the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, a rare recognition reserved for leaders who have made significant contributions to South Korea’s diplomacy. The honor was part of Seoul’s effort to strengthen relations with the U.S., especially after Trump announced a new trade deal with South Korea earlier that day, as per a report by The Sun.

At a dinner hosted by President Lee, Trump confirmed, “We did, we did. We did reach a deal.” The remarks reportedly sent the Korean won higher against the dollar.

The evening also included a “gold-adorned” dessert of brownies and tangerines served on a plate engraved with the word PEACE, meant to “celebrate a golden era of the Korea-U.S. alliance.”

Will Kim Jong-un Join Trump During His Asia Tour?

As Trump’s visit progressed, speculation grew that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un might make a surprise appearance. South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young recently suggested there was a “considerable possibility of a meeting.” He noted that North Korea was “paying attention to the United States,” though nothing was confirmed, as per a report by The Sun.

Hours before Trump’s arrival, Kim Jong-un launched a cruise missile from a warship, which Pyongyang described as a “deterrence exercise.” Despite the provocative display, Trump appeared open to dialogue, telling Lee, “I know Kim Jong Un very well, we get along very well.”

However, he hinted that a meeting might not happen this time, saying their schedules didn’t align. Still, Trump emphasized optimism about improving ties between Seoul and Pyongyang, remarking, “I know you’re officially at war but we will see what we can do to get that straightened out.”
