Daylight Saving Time (DST) is set to come into effect in less than two weeks, with California and most US states preparing to “spring forward.”

All participating states, except Arizona, will set their clocks forward by one hour on the second Sunday in March, which falls on March 9 this year. DST remains in effect until the first Sunday of November, marking the transition into autumn.

Daylight Saving Time: Purpose and significance

Daylight Saving Time allows for better utilisation of natural daylight during spring and summer. While it results in the loss of an hour of sleep in March, people in affected regions gain an extra hour when DST is reversed in November.

This year, clocks will revert to standard time on November 2, marking the end of DST.

Daylight Saving Time: Origins

Nearly one-third of the world’s countries implement some form of Daylight Saving Time. The concept, though not in its current form, has been proposed by various figures throughout history.

The original idea behind DST was to conserve energy by maximising daylight hours for economic activities. Widespread adoption of DST occurred primarily due to various energy crises.
