Goodwin, a 43-year-old escapologist, had been rehearsing for 'America's Got Talent: Extreme' when tragedy struck. During a high-risk stunt, he found himself trapped between two burning cars, leading to life-changing injuries. His legal team has claimed that the production of the show was marred by a rushed and chaotic approach, with staff lacking the necessary experience and expertise.
Stuart Fraenkel, Jonathan Goodwin's lawyer, explained the motivation behind the legal action, stating, "This is yet another example of the entertainment industry putting profits and ratings before safety. The producers and staff working on this show could have taken a number of simple steps to ensure Jonathan's safety. Instead, the production was rushed, chaotic, and staffed by a team that lacked the necessary expertise and experience. Jonathan will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life because there were inadequate safety practices, protocols, and procedures in place to protect him. He is bringing this claim to bring attention to an ongoing lack of safety problem in the entertainment industry."
The lawsuit was officially filed in California, marking a significant step in seeking accountability for the incident. Despite the legal action, Fremantle Media, the producers of the series, has refrained from making any comments regarding the litigation.
Jonathan Goodwin, who had previously participated in 'Britain's Got Talent' as a finalist in 2019, now faces a challenging road to recovery. In response to the accident, he has courageously retrained as a hypnotherapist, assisting others in overcoming issues such as anxiety and insomnia.
Amanda Abbington, Jonathan Goodwin's fiancee and well-known actress from 'Sherlock,' shared the grim details of the accident's aftermath. Goodwin fell 30 feet, lost a kidney, broke both shoulder blades, shattered both legs, suffered third-degree burns, and experienced spinal cord injuries. She expressed the grim reality that without revolutionary medical interventions, Jonathan may remain in a wheelchair indefinitely.
