Dallas airports experience major flight delays due to FAA equipment outage

Radar and communications outages at Dallas-area air traffic control centers compelled the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to halt flight journeys on Friday afternoon at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field, according to CNN.

The FAA connected the disruption to “a reported equipment issue at Dallas TRACON,” the facility tasked with controlling the approach and departure traffic at both airports, and attributed it to investigating the situation.

Communication Breakdowns at Love Field

Controllers at Love Field lost all radar and telephone communications during the malfunction. “I’m not departing anybody until we can get a system setup. We have no coms with approach right now,” one controller cited over the frequency, as spotted in audio reported by CNN.

A Southwest Airlines pilot also conveyed instructions from approach control: “Approach wanted to pass on to you to stop all departures. They can’t get a hold of you. They are having some com issues, I guess.”

Escalating Delays Across the Region

By mid-afternoon, delays spread throughout the place. As of 2 p.m. local time, DFW had 273 delayed flights, while Love Field reported 69. FAA advisories suggested average delays extending to two hours, with some flights waiting more than seven hours. The FAA mentioned, incoming flights were being metered until normal radar and communications could be restored, expected no earlier than 5 p.m. local time.

FAA Statement on Regional Impact

“We’ve lost all radar and phone communications,” the Dallas Love Field controller cited in audio recorded by LiveATC.net. “I’m not departing anybody until we can get a system setup. We have no coms with approach right now.”

In an official statement, the FAA mentioned, “The FAA is slowing flights into Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport due to a reported equipment issue at Dallas TRACON.” The Terminal Radar Approach Control facility supervises all arrivals and departures at both airports, making this outage highly disruptive for regional air traffic.

Guidance for Travelers

Travelers were advised to stay in touch with airlines for the latest updates, as normal operations were anticipated to resume later in the evening.
