‘Dal y Mellt’: Netflix announces the release of first ever Welsh crime thriller series

Netflix is set to release its first ever Welsh language drama Dal y Mellt which translates as 'Catch The Lightning', an S4C hit crime thriller about a group of misfits coming together for a heist.

It is an adaptation of the debut novel – dropped as a box by Iwan ‘Iwcs’ Roberts’ set on S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer in October.

The show will be released as six hour-long episodes in April 2023, Netflix has said it will help to promote and preserve the Welsh language through the series.


Netflix’s Benjamin King has said the content made in – and about – Wales ‘travels extremely well’ to worldwide audiences. While talking to the Welsh Affairs Committee at Westminster, he said the UK, Wales has consistently loved our well-known and best shows.

Roberts, an actor, and writer who starred in the Welsh soap opera Pobl y Cwm adapted his novel into a series which released in the autumn of 2022.


S4C CEO Sian Doyle said, to sell a Welsh-language-only show to a giant streamer like Netflix has set out our aim to take Welsh talent and language to the world.

There is an increased demand for foreign language shows as Nordic noir's The Killing and The Bridge doing well, while the South Korean series Squid Game took the world by storm when it first launched on Netflix in 2021.

Wales also garnering popularity with Amazon's huge success with the documentary series Welcome To Wrexham.
