Curious case of horrid smell on the International Space Station: Where did the rancid stink originate from? Mystery deepens

In a recent development it has been known that pretty recently a horrid and a toxic smell got generated at the International Space Station and the origination of the smell is still pretty unknown to everyone.

AP
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) reported a rancid odor when they opened the hatch of Russia's Progress cargo ship, which had just eventually docked, reported Futurism. Kelly O. Humphries from NASA stated that inquiries about the smell should be directed to Roscosmos which is the Russian space agency, though; Roscosmos has not commented anything on the issue.

According to Futurism, several initial assessments suggested that the odor might be due to ‘outgassing’ from the cargo, while, on the other hand, Russian sources pointed to potential contamination from the Poisk docking mechanism.

Eminent space journalist Anatoly Zak indicated that the situation was serious while noting that the crew members had to close the hatch immediately due to a toxic smell and droplets were observed, asserted Futurism. This incident has eventually raised concerns about the relationship between NASA and Roscosmos specifically as they are already at odds over a leaking section of the ISS, with NASA already warning of possible catastrophic failure while Roscosmos downplays the issue.

In spite of these challenges, NASA confirmed that air quality remained normal during this incident and no immediate danger was posed to the crew whatsoever, noted Futurism. The Progress spacecraft is expected to remain docked for several months before returning to Earth.
