If you are a resident of Los Angeles and have planned to head downtown today, it’s important to be aware that a curfew is in effect and could be extended depending on the situation, as per reports. Mayor Karen Bass has issued a curfew for parts of downtown Los Angeles from Tuesday to Wednesday after protests over immigration enforcement raids took place in Los Angeles, as per USA Today.

Curfew Imposed in Downtown Los Angeles Amid Protests

Bass announced that a limited curfew will take place from Tuesday at 8 p.m. for part of downtown, to 6 a.m. Wednesday and may even continue for several days, reported NBC.

Details of the Curfew

As per her order, the curfew includes about 1 square mile of downtown Los Angeles from the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway and the 10 Freeway to the point where it merges with the 110 and 5 freeways, reported NBC.


However, the partial curfew is not applicable to residents and people who work in the area, as per the report. The mayor said, "If you do not live or work in downtown LA, stay away," quoted NBC.

Why Was the Curfew Issued?

Bass also revealed that a curfew had been considered for several days but became necessary after 23 businesses were looted or vandalised on Monday night, according to the report.

Warnings from the Mayor

She wrote on her social media platform X (previously Twitter) post, "I issued a curfew starting tonight at 8pm for Downtown Los Angeles to stop bad actors who are taking advantage of the President's chaotic escalation," as per the X post.

Bass also warned that, "Law enforcement will arrest individuals who break the curfew, and you will be prosecuted," as per her X post.
