A Cuban national, Yordanis Cobos-Martinez (37), was arrested Wednesday, September 10, over allegedly beheading an Indian-American motel manager, identified as Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah (50) over a dispute of broken washing machine
A 37-year-old Cuban immigrant man was arrested Wednesday, September 10, on suspicion of murder after allegedly beheading a Dallas motel manager with a machete following a dispute over a broken washing machine, according to court documents obtained Thursday. Yordanis Cobos-Martinez was taken into custody covered in blood and armed with the machete allegedly used to kill Chandra Nagamallaiah, 50, according to an affidavit in support of an arrest warrant.

He also took Nagamallaiah’s keys and mobile phone after beheading him. A video of the incident shows the victim’s severed head rolling into a parking lot with blood streaming out. Cobos-Martinez is seen walking out, picking the head and moving towards a dumpster.

Suspect held without bond on immigration detainer

Jail records show Cobos-Martinez is being held without bond in the Dallas County Jail on an immigration detainer. The records identify him as an undocumented immigrant.

In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said Cobos-Martinez is a Cuban national. The department, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said a previous administration had "released" him after "Cuba would not accept him because of his criminal history."

A department spokesman did not immediately respond to request for more details. The statement said the case supports the Trump administration's efforts to deport undocumented people to so-called "third countries," or places where the person may have no connections.

According to the affidavit, Cobos-Martinez admitted to the killing in an interview with authorities. The incident occurred Wednesday morning after Nagamallaiah, identified by NBC Dallas-Fort Worth as the manager of a motel northeast of downtown Dallas, instructed Cobos-Martinez not to use a broken washing machine.

Cobos-Martinez and a woman were cleaning a room at the time, the affidavit says. Cobos-Martinez became upset because Nagamallaiah didn't speak to him directly and instead relied on the woman for translation, according to the affidavit.

Video evidence shows Dallas machete attack sequence

The affidavit cited video that captured Cobos-Martinez leaving the motel room, producing a machete and repeatedly cutting and stabbing Nagamallaiah.

Screaming, Nagamallaiah fled to the motel's front office, but Cobos-Martinez followed and continued to cut him, according to the affidavit. At one point, the victim's wife and son tried to stop Cobos-Martinez, but he pushed them away and continued assaulting Nagamallaiah, the affidavit says.
