US health officials have apprehended an increase in hospitalizations with COVID as the winter months are coming. Know about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report and possible coronavirus waves in the winter.

COVID-19 appears to have returned to the US, with 11 states showing a substantial increase in coronavirus hospitalizations. According to new map from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), 18,119 new COVID-19 admissions have been registered across the U.S. in the week ending November 18. It is an increase of 9.7 percent over the previous seven days. But Midwest and Great Lakes regions as well as parts of New England have shown greater increases.

Corona waves in winter?

Meanwhile, health officials have apprehended increased hospitalizations as the winter months are coming. As a study carried out in 2020 suggested, the COVID virus could remain active for longer in cold, dry conditions. It was found that colder weather leads to an increased spread of viruses and other infections because immunity is lower.

Talking to Newsweek, a CDC spokesperson said that usually October marks the "typical start of the respiratory virus season" and that hospitalization rates "could increase" over the coming months. This trend was seen last year also as hospitalizations with COVID-19 increased steadily since late June before peaking at the start of September. They came down slightly before remaining largely stable through October, hovering around 15,000 nationwide, before beginning to rise slightly through November. However, the levels remain well below the highest recorded peak- over 150,600 patients in the week ending January 15, 2021.

CDC Report

According to the late figures, released by the CDC on Sunday, North Dakota recorded the greatest rise in hospitalizations, an increase of 68.2 percent over the previous week.
