Could Nvidia’s reign end? Bill Gates says quantum computing is closer than you think

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted useful quantum computers are 20 years away, a view not shared by Bill Gates, who expects them in three to five years due to advances at Microsoft. Quantum computing could disrupt Nvidia's GPU dominance, but Nvidia...

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's comments last month about quantum computing sparked a heated debate as he said that useful quantum computers might not be available until another 20 years, as per a report.

Quantum could be here sooner

While not many agreed with his view, billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates claimed quantum computing could be ready for prime time within three to five years, reported The Motley Fool.

Gates was a lot more optimistic regarding the timeline of quantum computing. He said, "There is the possibility that Huang could be wrong," as quoted by The Motley Fool.

He is especially optimistic due to the developments Gates has witnessed firsthand at Microsoft, where he is still in close touch with the firm's quantum computing projects. Gates is particularly impressed with the efforts being made on Microsoft's "world's most powerful quantum machine". Mitra Azizirad, Microsoft's president and COO of strategic missions and technologies, recently said that 2025 is "the year to become Quantum-Ready."

Could quantum computing replace Nvidia’s GPUs?

Nvidia, known for its preeminence in the GPU arena, stands to be severely disrupted if quantum computing achieves the quantum leap Gates sees on the horizon, as per the report.

Quantum computers can potentially excel over conventional GPUs, particularly when it comes to tasks demanding sheer computational power, according to the report. For instance, Google's just-released Willow chip has already shown a capacity to solve complex problems in mere minutes that the world's best supercomputers would take billions of years to solve, reported The Motley Fool.

According to The Motley Fool, some experts claimed that quantum computing is an existential threat to Nvidia. DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria cautioned that as quantum computing continues to improve, it will likely replace some of the uses of GPU data centres with a much smaller footprint and much faster computation.

Nvidia prepares for a hybrid future with quantum and GPUs

Even with the increasing competition, Nvidia may not be in immediate danger. There's still a possibility that Huang's 20-year prediction for quantum computing may come to pass, according to Gates.

Furthermore, Nvidia is already gearing up for a hybrid future, one where both GPUs and quantum chips coexist. The company is setting itself up for this eventuality with its CUDA-Q platform, something that may keep Nvidia relevant no matter how fast quantum computing develops, as per the report.

FAQs

How could quantum computing impact Nvidia?

Quantum computing might eventually challenge Nvidia’s GPUs, especially for tasks requiring massive computing power. However, Nvidia is already planning for a hybrid future, where quantum and GPU systems work together.

What is quantum computing?
Unlike regular computers, which use bits to process information, quantum computers use qubits, allowing them to handle complex tasks way faster.
