Could living near mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, actually make you safer? The idea sounds surprising because these powerful predators can inspire fear in communities that share their habitat. Yet new research suggests their presence may bring an unexpected benefit: fewer dangerous collisions between vehicles and deer and elk. Scientists found that mountain lions change how their prey uses the landscape, pushing deer into more remote areas and away from places with many roads. The finding offers a new look at how predators can influence human safety without directly interacting with people. The study examined five years of data from Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula. It suggests that living alongside large carnivores can sometimes produce benefits that communities may overlook. The study, led by Justin P Suraci and colleagues, is titled 'Large carnivores shape road safety through effects on prey space use' and was published in Current Biology in August 2026.

MOUNTAIN LIONS CHANGED DEER BEHAVIOR

According to Scientific American, researchers analyzed data from 503 camera traps and 59 GPS collars tracking pumas from 2020 to 2025. They also examined information about black-tailed deer, elk and vehicle collisions. During those five years, deer and elk were involved in more than 950 vehicle collisions on the peninsula, causing two human deaths and more than 80 injuries. The results were striking. Researchers found that areas with high puma occupancy had a 67 percent lower probability of a deer-vehicle collision and a 76 percent reduction in the expected number of collisions over five years. The effect appeared to stem largely from changes in deer behavior rather than simply fewer deer. Where pumas were present, deer were 15 percent less likely to occur in areas with high road density and 86 percent more likely to occupy remote habitat away from development and associated traffic. Deer activity also shifted toward daylight, potentially reducing the risk of some nighttime collisions.


FEAR PUSHED DEER AWAY FROM ROADS

The reduction was not mainly caused by mountain lions killing deer and reducing their numbers. Instead, the predators appeared to change deer behavior through fear. Their presence pushed deer into more remote areas, where vegetation offered more cover. Deer were 15 percent less likely to be in areas with many roads. Mountain lions also made deer more active during daylight rather than at night, when pumas are most active. Study co-author Mark Elbroch said this could give drivers a better chance of seeing deer and avoiding crashes. Elbroch hopes findings like these can help people recognize the benefits large predators may bring to communities that live alongside them.

Kaitlyn Gaynor, a wildlife ecologist at the University of British Columbia who was not involved in the study, told Scientific American that the findings reveal how carnivores can reduce conflicts with prey through complex ecological interactions.
