Margaret Qualley tries to play matchmaker between mom Andie MacDowell and Bill Murray after surprising backstage encounter on The Tonight Show
Margaret Qualley, 30, revealed on the August 14 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she attempted to play matchmaker between her mother, Andie MacDowell, and former Groundhog Day co-star Bill Murray.

Qualley was promoting her new film, Honey Don’t!, when Murray, 74, appeared on the show alongside musical guest the Pedrito Martínez Group.

“Breaking news!” Qualley told Fallon and the studio audience, recounting how Murray visited her backstage before the taping.

“Bill Murray, literally tonight, he pops into my backstage dressing room,” she said. “He’s wearing a Piggly Wiggly shirt. And I grew up in North Carolina, and Piggly Wiggly’s a Southern thing.”

The encounter revealed a shared connection, Murray currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina, where MacDowell also resides.

“I’m putting two and two together. He’s living in Charleston. She’s living in Charleston. They’ve got this kind of rage towards each other, but maybe he’s trying to make amends. And I’m like, she’s single, he’s single. They’re both crazy. Let’s get it together!” Qualley said.

During their conversation, Murray acknowledged that his working relationship with MacDowell on the 1993 comedy wasn’t perfect. “I’m gonna give you the tea,” Qualley said, quoting Murray: “You know, your mom and I, we didn’t get along so good while we were making that movie. She took a lot of time to get her hair done, and she didn’t know her lines this one time.”

Qualley, however, seemed undeterred. She hopes to connect Murray with MacDowell after the show. “I said to come circle back and get my number if he wants to connect with my mom,” she said.

“And, you know, if he’s got any sense at all, he’d be the luckiest guy in the world!” Qualley added. Fallon agreed, echoing her sentiment.
