Trump's $2,000 Stimulus Check
Trump $2,000 stimulus check: As 2026 begins, talk of a potential $2,000 stimulus check is making headlines, but what’s real and what’s speculation? US president Donald Trump has floated the idea of sending checks to low and middle-income Americans by this year, funded by US tariffs, but the details remain uncertain.

What Trump Has Said About the $2,000 Stimulus Check

Trump has promised the payments repeatedly, saying in November last year that, “We’ve taken in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariff money. We’re going to be issuing dividends…probably the middle of next year, a little bit later than that, of thousands of dollars for individuals of moderate income, middle income," as quoted by The Mirror.

Who Could Be Eligible for Trump's $2,000 Stimulus Check

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also weighed in, telling Fox News that the proposed checks would be aimed at “working families,” earning “less than, say, $100,000,” as quoted in the report. Trump reinforced the idea in a Truth Social post on November 9, saying, “A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone,” as quoted by The Mirror.

Trump Says Leftover Tariff Money Would Reduce Debt

The next day Trump wrote that, “All money left over from the $2000 payments made to low and middle income USA Citizens, from the massive Tariff Income pouring into our Country from foreign countries, which will be substantial, will be used to SUBSTANTIALLY PAY DOWN NATIONAL DEBT,” as quoted by The Mirror.

Congressional Approval Still Required

Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told CBS’s Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan that the plan will “depend on what happens with Congress," adding, "I would expect that in the new year, the president will bring forth a proposal to Congress to make that happen," as quoted by The Mirror.

Any payments would require new legislation allowing the Treasury to distribute the checks. Hassett remains optimistic, saying, “a lot of positive news about the economy," as quoted by The Mirror.

Questions Over How Tariffs Would Fund the Checks

However, Hassett pointed out that while Trump has said the funds will come from tariffs, Hassett said that "in the end, you know, we get taxes, we get tariffs, we get revenue from lots of places, and then Congress decides how to spend those money. That's an appropriation," as quoted by The Mirror.

So the questions remain about how much revenue tariffs have actually generated. Trump has made inconsistent claims, at times suggesting tariffs have brought in billions and other times trillions of dollars. Erica York, vice president of Federal Tax Policy at the Tax Foundation, said that there is "zero truth to that being anywhere near the trillions” so far, adding that, “The latest data from the Treasury Department shows that for the calendar year so far, all tariffs have generated about $205 billion with a ‘B,’ and that includes preexisting tariffs," as quoted by The Mirror.

How Much Have Tariffs Actually Raised

According to Treasury Department data for fiscal year 2025, tariffs have generated about $195 billion through September, far below the trillions Trump has cited.

What Happens if the Court Blocks the Tariffs

Legal uncertainty also clouds the plan. The Supreme Court is set to rule on whether Trump’s use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was constitutional. Several retailers, including Costco, have sued the administration to recover tariffs they’ve already paid in case the court rules against the president. Hassett said he is confident the court will side with the administration.

When asked on Air Force One in November whether he would still issue the checks if the Supreme Court overturned his tariff plans, Trump replied, “Then I’d have to do something else," as quoted by The Mirror.
