New York authorities are leveraging facial recognition technology and forensic evidence to track down the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Thompson, who was scheduled to speak at an investor conference, arrived on foot at the Hilton hotel when the assailant struck.

The attacker, clad in a light brown or cream-colored jacket and a black face mask, reportedly waited for five minutes before shooting Thompson multiple times in the back and leg.

Despite a weapon malfunction during the attack, the gunman quickly cleared the jam and continued firing.

The suspect fled the scene on foot before escaping along an alley. Early reports suggested the killer used a Citi Bike to escape, but Lyft, the operator of Citi Bikes, later confirmed that no such vehicle had been accessed.

Key Evidence: Starbucks Image and Bullet Casings

Authorities are honing in on clues from a Starbucks surveillance camera. Minutes before the shooting, the suspect was captured on camera purchasing items, as per a report by BBC.

Although the individual wore a mask, part of his nose and eyes were visible. This has enabled investigators to employ facial recognition software in their search for a match.

At the crime scene, investigators recovered three spent shell casings and three live rounds, each inscribed with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” Police are exploring whether these cryptic messages were meant to convey a motive or warning.

A discarded mobile phone found along the escape route is also being analyzed for leads. Additionally, investigators are examining Thompson’s hotel room for potential evidence connected to the attack.

Law enforcement in Maple Grove, Minnesota, Thompson’s hometown, confirmed a previous suspicious incident at his home in 2018 but found no criminal activity at the time.

Nationwide Attention and Ongoing Investigation
