Costco changes 2026

Costco changes 2026: Costco is preparing a series of behind-the-scenes changes that could noticeably reshape the shopping experience in 2026, from where new stores open to how members move through checkout and even access the food court, as per a report.

How many new Costco warehouses will open next year

The warehouse retailer has confirmed plans to open new locations as part of a broader expansion strategy. In September, Costco said at least 35 new warehouses were planned for 2026, though CEO Ron Vachris later acknowledged delays at some international sites, including Spain, as per The Sun report. That adjustment brings the expected total to 28 new warehouses next year, with the company targeting about 30 openings annually from 2027 onward. Five of the planned locations will be relocations rather than entirely new builds.

Costco checkout experience set for a major upgrade

Inside stores, Costco is leaning further into technology. A self-checkout system that allows employees to scan items directly from customers’ carts is expected to become permanent. The company says the process can speed up checkout by roughly 20%, reducing the need for shoppers to scan each item themselves.

Costco’s digital strategy and app updates explained

Digitally, Costco will continue building on changes introduced this year, including password-less sign-in. In 2026, the Costco app is expected to become more personalized and more focused on encouraging membership sign-ups and auto-renewals, as executives look to protect renewal rates, as per The Sun report.

How Costco plans to reduce its carbon footprint

Costco is also expanding local sourcing for its Kirkland brand. More products will be sourced regionally to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and limit exposure to import tariffs.

Finally, food court access rules are set to expand. After testing membership verification at some locations in 2024, Costco plans to roll out more card checks and digital scanners at food courts, including for customers paying cash, as per The Sun report. The move, while controversial for some shoppers, is aimed at standardizing access across locations.
