Fresh details have emerged in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case, where the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) announced the discovery of a “new possible ransom note” connected to the case. Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist and ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson home during early hours on February 1, 2026.

An intense search operation was launched by the Pima County sheriff's office, led by Sheriff Chris Nanos. They were later joined by the FBI as the case of alleged kidnapping caught national prominence. Following initial investigation, authorities believed that Nancy, 84, was taken away from her home against her will. Amid the investigation, which has been ongoing for nearly eight months now, several theories emerged; DNA samples have been examined, and hundreds of leads have surfaced, but investigators have failed to achieve a major breakthrough.

Now, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesperson told PEOPLE on Monday (September 28, 2026) that the department was “recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” a spokesperson for the department told PEOPLE on Monday, September 28. “Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility,” PCSD added. The FBI had not responded to the claims of a new potential ransom note at the time of filoinb of this report.

What we know about previous ransom notes

The latest claims linked to a new ransom note came weeks after details pertaining to previous notes and emails received by media outlets TMZ and KOLD TV surfaced, where the sender made several claims about whether Nancy was alive or dead and also about her location and health. These notes also included a cryptocurrency demand.

In July 2026, authorities investigating the Nancy Guthrie case released two early ransom notes in hopes that someone will recognize the writing style. The second note claimed that she died shortly after she was kidnapped. The two notes initially went to KOLD TV, a Tucson television station, days after the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie went missing. Authorities have not said whether Nancy Guthrie is still alive.
