Conventions TV Ratings war: DNC edges past RNC with final night crossing 26 mn viewers

Accepting the party's nomination, Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the Democratic ticket against Republican nominee Donald Trump. Nielsen figures show that 15 broadcast and cable networks averaged 26.2 million viewers for coverage of the Democrats' closing night. That is approximately 820,000 more viewers than the 25.38 million who tuned in to the Republican National Convention last night.

The number of people attending the Democratic National Convention closing night on Thursday exceeded both the attendance on the party's final night four years prior and the Republican convention in July. The number of viewers on Thursday is significantly higher than that of the first three days of the Democratic convention, which attracted an average of 20.33 million viewers nightly. On Monday, the average viewership was 20.03 million, on Tuesday it was 20.78 million, and on Wednesday it was 20.18 million across broadcast and cable networks. When Thursday's total is taken into account, the convention's primetime average of 21.8 million viewers was slightly higher than the four-night average of 21.59 million viewers for the 2020 convention.

In terms of TV viewers, the DNC's four-day average outpaced the Republican convention in July by 14%; the RNC averaged 19.07 million viewers over four nights. About 86 per cent of all TV viewers on Thursday were distributed among the six networks—MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox News, and CNN and the remaining 3.62 million viewers were split between PBS, Scripps News, Telemundo, Univision, BET, CNNe, Fox Business, Newsmax, and NewsNation.

The combined viewership on Thursday reached its highest point during Harris's acceptance speech, marking her as the first woman of colour and the second woman to secure a major-party presidential nomination.
