On Monday,
October 13, 2025, US financial
markets will remain open in observance of
Columbus Day, a federal holiday also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in some regions. While federal offices, banks, and post offices will close, major stock exchanges, including the
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and
Nasdaq, will operate during regular trading hours. The NYSE's next scheduled holiday is Thanksgiving Day on November 27, 2025.
Columbus Day 2025, which overlaps with Indigenous Peoples' Day 2025, has been observed as a national holiday since 1937 to honor the contributions of Italian Americans. In recent years, however, there has been increasing advocacy for recognizing Indigenous Peoples instead, highlighting the violence and enslavement inflicted upon native populations by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus when he arrived in the Americas in 1492.
Despite the ongoing debate, Columbus Day remains on the federal holiday calendar for October 2025, meaning some institutions will close while others stay open on October 13. Columbus Day is not considered a stock market holiday, so the NYSE and Nasdaq will remain open and follow their regular trading hours on October 13, 2025.
The US bond market will be closed on Columbus Day, October 13, 2025, as it follows a different holiday schedule than the stock market. While electronic trading platforms will remain active, physical trading floors and over-the-counter (OTC) operations will not operate.
Commodity futures markets, including the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), will follow modified trading schedules on Columbus Day.
