Columbus Day 2022: What's open and what's not?

Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday in October, honours the date on which Christopher Columbus first set foot in America on October 12, 1492. In 1971, it was made a federal holiday.

Most banks across the US will remain closed on the occasion of Columbus Day which is a federal holiday. American National Bank is one exception, keeping all of its locations open. ATMs will remain accessible if you require cash or wish to deposit money.

The US Postal Service will be closed on this day, but UPS and FedEx will run regular operations, including all deliveries. Additionally, all of their drop-off points will operate throughout normal hours.

The stock markets are all open and active.

Federal offices will be closed, but things are a little hazier at the city, state, and county levels. For instance, Delaware will be open, but the City of Chicago offices will be closed. This is not regarded as a legal holiday by the state. Additionally, not all states celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day give their citizens compensated time off.
