The US Department of Education has clarified that Columbia University must comply with its commitments to address anti-Israel activism to regain $400 million in federal funding. Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized that the school must follow through on its promises.

Federal Funding Reinstatement

Columbia University recently lost $400 million in federal funding. The university had agreed to new policies, including stricter rules on campus protests and identity concealment. However, reports indicate that the school’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, later softened these measures in private meetings.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon addressed concerns over Columbia’s compliance. She stated that funding would not be restored unless the university fully adheres to its commitments. The Education Department is monitoring the situation before making any decisions.

No Immediate Restoration

McMahon clarified that there is no set timeline for restoring federal funds. Columbia must demonstrate that it is following through on its public commitments. She emphasized that compliance is a prerequisite for negotiations.

On Friday, Columbia issued a public statement outlining its new policies. These included police intervention during protests and a ban on face coverings used to conceal identities during rule violations.

However, Armstrong reportedly told faculty members that there was no mask ban. She also committed to reviewing anti-discrimination policies, improving staff training, and increasing ideological diversity. Additionally, she promised to examine declining Jewish and African American student enrollment.
