Columbia University has announced that it submitted erroneous data as part of its participation in the college rankings done by U. S. News & World Report for Best colleges, 2022. The revelation came as part of a letter from Provost Mary Boyce, who stated that Columbia would immediately begin to contribute data to the Common Data Set, an attempt by colleges and institutions to offer a wide range of data about their institutional performance to the public.

In February, Columbia Mathematics Professor Michael Thaddeus questioned the Ivy League school's surge in rankings from 18th position, on its inception in 1988, to 2nd place in 2021.

Thaddeus noted on Columbia University's Department of Mathematics website that while a few other top-tier universities have improved their rankings, none have matched Columbia's extraordinary rise.

The ranking foul happened when Michael Thaddeus, the Mathematics professor, posted an analysis of the data that the university had submitted.

Thaddeus pointed to the information submitted by the college to U.S. News & World Report in addressing Columbia's sharp rise in rankings. He asked if we could be beyond any doubt that the information precisely reflects the reality of life inside the college.

In reaction to the discoveries of Thaddeus, the Columbian College Executive Mary Boyce said in an explanation from June that the college would abstain from submitting information to U.S. News and World Report for thought within the publication's 2022 undergrad college rankings.
