The movie business abounds with films inspired by real-life occurrences, each with differing levels of adherence to the original events. While some, like Selma (2014), offer almost impeccable biographical portrayals of figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., others, like the recent comedic spoof Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, take a more flexible approach.

Films based on true events are highly popular and frequently sought-after by studios as potential projects because they are often easier to acquire the rights to than established, popular intellectual property.

The upcoming film Cocaine Bear (2023) by filmmaker Elizabeth Banks is based on a true story, specifically the incident of a black bear in Georgia that ingested cocaine after a plane crash in 1985. However, the film's plot is largely fictional, and the violent and gory rampage by the bear portrayed in the movie is not based on any real events. Despite this, the film promises to be an entertaining and absurdly enjoyable ride for viewers.

Cocaine Bear: When is it releasing and where to watch?

Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear hit theatres on February 24, 2023. Therefore, as of now – the only to watch the movie remains limited to theatres. After a few days, it may hit digital streaming platforms such as Apple, YouTube, Amazon or Peacock.

Regrettably, Cocaine Bear cannot be streamed on Netflix at this time. While the streaming platform offers a wide variety of romantic comedies starring popular actors and actresses, the film is not currently part of their movie collection.

More about Cocaine Bear
The story of Cocaine Bear originates from an incident in December 1985 involving a drug smuggler and former narcotics officer named Andrew C. Thornton II. While piloting a plane carrying a load of cocaine, Thornton realized that the cargo was too heavy and dropped a duffel bag filled with the drug. In an attempt to retrieve the bag, he opened his parachute but failed to do so properly and fell to his death.

The bag of cocaine, worth around fifteen million US dollars, was then found by a black bear, which consumed it and subsequently went on a drug-induced killing spree. While the real events are well-documented, the film adaptation is likely to follow the story of the bear's drug-fueled rampage, so as to avoid spoilers, the rest of the tale will not be disclosed.
