Climate activists in Vienna attacked a painting by the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt on Tuesday. A Last Generation member poured a dark oily liquid on the glass cover of the painting ‘Death and Life’ at the Leopold Museum, while another glued a hand impression to the screen. The museum staff intercepted the attackers.

Stop using fossil energy

Members of the Last Generation used social media to share images of the attempted destruction, rallying public opposition to the use of oil and gas energy. They also want the public to know that, despite knowing about the problems for over 50 years, governments have not taken action. The Earth is heading towards destruction as a result.

Ironically, the protestors chose a day when an oil firm sponsored free entry to the museum.

There is no damage to the painting.

Expressing relief that the painting is safe, the director of the museum said the climate concerns are justified but certainly not the method and manner of protest. Classic paintings, if damaged once, may never be restored to their original status.

Other activist groups in the past have also attempted to disfigure the cover of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in a London museum.
