A 95-year-old woman who was Tasered by police at an Australian care home passed away on Wednesday. Clare Nowland, the elderly woman, sustained critical injuries when the police responded to reports of her wandering around the care home with a steak knife at approximately 4:00 a.m. last Wednesday. New South Wales Police (NSW) confirmed that she died while being "surrounded by family and loved ones."

This incident has caused a public outcry with people demanding just for Nowland. The officer who deployed the Taser on Nowland has been charged with assault.

The 33-year-old senior constable is set to appear in court in early July, facing charges of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault. Meanwhile, the officer remains suspended from duty with pay as investigations into the incident continue.

Nowland resided in a care home located in Cooma, a town approximately 114 kilometers (71 miles) south of Canberra, the capital city of Australia. NSW Police expressed their condolences and stated that their thoughts are with those who had the privilege of knowing and loving Nowland, emphasizing her life characterized by family, kindness, and community.

Initial reports from the police last week indicated that Mrs. Nowland was "armed" with a steak knife. On Friday, they confirmed that she used a walking frame for mobility and that the officer discharged his Taser when she approached him at a slow pace. Tragically, Nowland suffered a fractured skull and a severe brain bleed after falling and striking her head during the incident.

The incident has sparked demands for a state parliamentary inquiry and the release of the police bodycam footage capturing the confrontation. The Nowland family issued a statement describing their loved one as a well-respected, beloved, and charitable member of the local community. They referred to her as the loving and gentle matriarch of the Nowland family and requested privacy during this difficult time following her passing.
