Chrome’s new Gemini 3 auto browse explained: How it works and potential privacy risks
Google is pushing Chrome beyond simple web surfing with a new AI-powered feature designed to handle everyday online chores. Called Auto Browse, the tool allows users to automate complex, multi-step tasks directly inside the browser. Powered by Gemini 3, it aims to save time, but it also comes with clear responsibilities and risks.

What is Auto Browse in Google Chrome?

Auto Browse is Google’s latest attempt to turn Chrome into an active assistant rather than a passive browser. Powered by the Gemini 3 model, the feature is designed to carry out multi-step tasks on a user’s behalf. Instead of opening multiple tabs and filling out forms manually, users can ask Auto Browse to handle processes such as researching travel expenses, booking appointments, managing subscriptions, or checking whether bills are paid.

Google says Auto Browse can take care of repetitive digital chores that often eat up time. According to the company’s blog post, “Auto browse can help you optimise your vacation planning by doing some of the mundane work.” Testers have already used it for tasks like scheduling appointments, collecting tax documents, filing expense reports, renewing driving licences, and getting quotes from plumbers and electricians.

How does Gemini 3 power Auto Browse?

The feature relies on Gemini 3’s agentic and multimodal capabilities. This allows Auto Browse to understand both text and images while navigating websites. It can identify photo contents, search for similar items, add products to a cart, apply discount codes, and stay within a set budget, as per a report by CNBCTV18.

With user permission, Auto Browse can also tap into Google Password Manager to sign in securely to websites and complete tasks that require authentication. While the AI does much of the work, users are kept in the loop and asked to review sensitive steps or manually take control when needed.

Who can use Auto Browse right now?

Auto Browse is currently rolling out only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. To use it on a computer, users must meet several conditions. They need to be at least 18 years old, update to the latest version of Chrome, opt into Gemini in Chrome, and sign in with a personal Google account.

The feature is not available in Incognito mode and cannot be used with work or school accounts. Once enabled, users can access it by clicking Gemini at the top of Chrome, typing in a task, and monitoring the Auto Browse icon while the AI works in the active tab, as per a report by CNBCTV18.

What does Google say about data and responsibility?

Google has made it clear that Auto Browse is still experimental. The company warns users to proceed carefully, stating, “As we continuously work to improve its safeguards, use auto browse in Gemini in Chrome carefully and safely to prevent unintended and potentially harmful results. You’re responsible for Gemini's actions during a task, including mistakes and unexpected results like purchases.”

Users can review or delete their interactions through Gemini Apps Activity. Automated browsing sessions are also clearly marked in Chrome History with a specific icon, allowing users to track where the AI has been active.

What are the risks of using Auto Browse?

Despite added safeguards, Auto Browse is not immune to security concerns. Like similar AI-driven tools, it remains vulnerable to prompt injection attacks when visiting malicious websites. These attacks can manipulate the AI into performing actions the user did not intend, highlighting the importance of supervision when using automated browsing features, as per a report by CNBCTV18.
