Christmas weather forecast 2023: Will it be White Christmas?

White Christmas is often touted as the most cherished one for Americans. Will it happen this year?

To experience a white Christmas, specific conditions need to be met: either at least 1 inch of snow on the ground by Christmas morning or snowfall accumulating to 0.1 inches on December 25. This criterion aligns with the standards set by the National Weather Service, Fox reported.

Across the Lower 48, regions like the northern and central Rockies, California's Sierra Nevada, and the Washington and Oregon Cascades boast the highest chances of encountering snow on Christmas Day. The likelihood of a white Christmas soars to 90 per cent to 100 per cent in the lofty peaks of these mountain ranges.

Locations like Aspen, Colorado, stand among a select few with a guaranteed 100 per cent chance of a white Christmas, as per National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In northern North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, there's also a strong likelihood, ranging from 90 per cent to 100 per cent, of witnessing a white Christmas.

For cities like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Madison in Wisconsin, and Burlington in Vermont, the probability hovers between 60 per cent to 75 per cent in an average year. However, the chances drop below 50 per cent in cities like Detroit.

In New York City, experiencing at least 1 inch of snow on Christmas morning occurs roughly once every six years. Further north, in Boston, it happens slightly more frequently, about once every five years. However, in cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, a white Christmas occurs only about once a decade.
