Actors Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler recently spoke with Hoda Kotb on her Making Space podcast, sharing deeply personal reflections on living with multiple sclerosis (MS). The two famous stars, diagnosed with the same condition, experienced distinctive ways of handling their disease.

How MS has shaped their perspectives

Sigler has had a twenty-year journey of accepting her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. She explains that her trip involved self-development followed by acknowledgment leading to emotional awareness. The changes in her perspective because of MS have brought her greater depth, yet she reflects them positively. The changes brought by multiple sclerosis have significant meaning to her, although she refuses to let it control her identity.

The process of accepting her medical condition continues for Applegate. She continues to face her disease diagnosis, which she received three years and four months ago, since she has yet to achieve peace with it. Presently, MS controls the daily routine of her existence. Pain, combined with exhaustion, torpedoes her through even straightforward activities such as visits to the dentist. Applegate expresses feeling trapped inside a bad dream from which she cannot escape while she continues her search for approval.

The emotional toll of living publicly with MS

The actresses explained how it exhausts them to answer perpetual questions related to their health. At a recent party, Applegate told her friend about the overwhelming experience of dealing with frequent questions about her health status after breast cancer survival. She experienced anger because she needed to repeat her health status descriptions to others despite their resistance to accepting the truthful response.

When she received her diagnosis, Sigler experienced the same denial because she struggled to embrace all aspects of her experience. She now admires Applegate’s openness and vulnerability during these early years of adjustment.

Finding strength in daily rituals

Meditation plays an essential role in maintaining the mental and emotional equilibrium of Sigler. A vivid mental picture recurs to her because it shows her running on the beach toward children; she cannot move physically anymore. Those meditations bring her peace and happiness despite what her son asked about being sad. According to her, she experiences true freedom within her mental realm, which remains beyond medical diagnosis.

In their individual stages of MS, the stories from Applegate and Sigler portray the private development of coping with MS, alongside the need for understanding and waiting before figuring out true feelings.
