China unveils world’s fastest train, breaks 281 mph speed record in pre-service trials; commercial service set for 2026

China has begun pre-service trials for the CR450, hailed as the world’s fastest bullet train. During trials on the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway line, the train reached a top speed of 281 mph (450 km/h), as revealed on October 21.

The CR450’s prototype, unveiled in November last year, was designed to hit speeds of up to 249 mph (400 km/h) and has since undergone rigorous testing across multiple performance metrics. Now in its final evaluation phase, the train is edging closer to commercial service, expected in 2026 after completing 600,000 kilometers of operational testing.

Developed by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) subsidiaries, the CR450 incorporates a series of structural innovations to achieve its record-breaking speed. Its nose cone has been lengthened from 12.5 meters to 15 meters, while fully enclosed bogies and aerodynamic lower skirt panels further reduce drag by 22 percent. The train is also 20 centimeters shorter and 55 tons lighter than previous models, boosting acceleration and efficiency.


Over the course of five years, researchers and engineers refined the train’s design with meticulous attention, tracking improvements in increments as tiny as 0.1 percent.

The CR450 can accelerate from 0 to 350 km/h (217 mph) in just 4 minutes and 40 seconds, over a minute faster than the current CR400 Fuxing trains. According to CCTV, this achievement marks a leap from “Made in China” to “Created in China” in high-speed rail technology, signaling the country’s growing prowess in transportation innovation.

Once operational, the CR450 is expected to become the fastest commercial train in the world.
