Child tax credit refund: For families raising children, the federal child tax credit can make a real difference at tax time. Designed to help offset the costs of raising kids, the credit allows eligible taxpayers to reduce their tax bill and sometimes receive a refund for each qualifying child under age 17, as per a report.

How Much Is the Child Tax Credit

The credit limit was raised in 2025 to $2,200 per child, as opposed to the limit in 2024, which was $2,000. While some families may even receive part of this as a refundable payment through the additional child tax credit, which can provide up to $1,700 per qualifying child, as per a Bankrate report.

Child Tax Credit vs Other Tax Benefits

Child tax credit is independent from other tax benefits enjoyed by families. Child and dependent care credit provides tax benefits to families to help pay child care bills, while the earned income tax credit provides tax benefits to lower-income families. If family has dependents and is not eligible to receive the child tax credit, they can receive the credit for other dependents up to $500.
